How to pick an FPL captain that actually scores.
Captaincy is the single biggest points decision you make each gameweek. Your captain scores double, so picking right is worth anywhere from zero to fifteen extra points on a good week. Picking wrong can leave you staring at an armband on a blank while the template cashes in. FPL Pilot turns that decision into a clean three-way call, built from the data that actually correlates with captain returns.
Why fixtures matter more than form
A striker on a six game cold streak can wake up against a promoted defence and bank a hat-trick. Form tells you what happened last month. Expected goals against a specific opponent tells you what is likely to happen this Saturday. FPL Pilot scores the upcoming fixture using xG, xGA, and clean sheet probability, not a colour from one to five.
Effective ownership and rank protection
A player owned by 40% but captained by 25% has an effective ownership of 65%. When your captain matches the field, you protect rank. When they outscore the field, you climb. Differential captains below 10% EO are rank-chasing plays. High EO captains like Haaland and Salah are the default when you are protecting a good position. Pilot spells out where you stand and which game you are playing.
Minutes safety is the hidden killer
A captain who gets subbed at 60 minutes scores you a fraction of what an identical starter would. A rotated captain on a bench scores zero. Pilot factors minutes probability into every recommendation so you do not captain a player Pep is about to rest for midweek Europe. The best captain is not the highest xPts on paper. It is the highest xPts you actually collect.

How does FPL Pilot pick the best captain? +
Pilot looks at your actual squad, upcoming fixtures, expected points projections, minutes safety, and ownership differentials to recommend your strongest captain and vice-captain options.
When should I captain a differential? +
Differential captains under 10% EO make sense when you are chasing rank and have a player with a strong fixture the template is ignoring. If you are protecting rank, stick with high-EO options.
What is effective ownership (EO)? +
Effective ownership accounts for captaincy. A player owned by 50% but captained by 30% has an EO of 80%. When your captain matches the field, you protect rank. When they outscore the field, you gain rank.
Should I captain a midfielder or forward? +
Position matters less than fixture and form. Midfielders can outscore forwards through clean sheet points and bonus. Always compare xPts across positions rather than defaulting to your striker.
