FPL GW1 Captain Picks 2026/27: Haaland, Fernandes and the Case for Szoboszlai

The GW1 2026/27 fixtures are confirmed. Here's how Haaland, B.Fernandes and Szoboszlai actually compare on ceiling, penalty duty and fixture, with the numbers behind each.

Data current as of: 1 August 2026. Fixtures, prices and projections are the confirmed 2026/27 GW1 set. Coverage: The GW1 captaincy framework explains how to weigh these factors. This post applies it to the confirmed fixtures.

The framework said to shortlist on ceiling, keep the penalty takers, then let the fixture decide. GW1 fixtures are locked in now, so here is what that shortlist actually looks like.

The shortlist: three penalty takers, three different cases

1. Haaland (MCI, £15.5m)

Man City host Bournemouth at home in Gameweek 1, rated FDR 3, moderate rather than soft. Haaland is owned by 75.2% of squads and remains City's penalty taker. He is the template captain because the field is captaining him too, not because the fixture is the kindest on the board.

2. B.Fernandes (MUN, £12.0m)

Man Utd travel to newly-promoted Hull City, rated FDR 2, the easiest fixture of any realistic captain option this gameweek. Fernandes takes United's penalties, corners and free kicks, and the model projects him for 3.4 points in Gameweek 1 alone, second only to Haaland among nailed premium options. At 48.9% ownership he is a template pick that is not yet the consensus one.

3. Szoboszlai (LIV, £7.0m)

Liverpool travel to Newcastle, rated FDR 3, tougher on paper than Fernandes' fixture and no easier than Haaland's. The case for Szoboszlai anyway: he is Liverpool's primary penalty taker, he is projected for 20.6 points across Gameweeks 1 to 6, fractionally ahead of Haaland's 20.2, and he is owned by 48.2% of squads at less than half Haaland's price. If you want a differential armband with a real statistical case behind it rather than a fixture punt, this is it.

Why the model's top GW1 name is not on this list

The single highest Gameweek 1 projection belongs to Guéhi (MCI, £6.0m), a defender, not any of the three above. That is a feature of how flat GW1 projections are before real minutes and form exist this season, not a signal to captain a defender. Clean sheet probability compresses the range between options this early, which is exactly why the framework weighs ceiling and penalty duty over a single point estimate. Save defensive picks for your squad, not your armband.

Bottom line

Take Haaland if you want to move with the field. Take B.Fernandes if you want the same profile on a friendlier fixture. Take Szoboszlai if you want a differential backed by penalties and the model's own numbers, not just a hopeful fixture.
