Coventry City FPL 2026/27: What Pre-Season Friendlies Say About the Starting XI

Coventry City are back in the top flight, and that creates a specific problem for FPL: the usual evidence (last season's minutes, clean sheets, xG) does not exist for a promoted side. Every Coventry player launches at or near the minimum price, which means the squad is full of theoretically-cheap picks with no way to tell who actually plays.

Friendlies are the only signal available before GW1. Not a perfect one, but a real one: teams that start their first-choice XI in July and August are showing you their plan.

The three friendlies

Coventry played AFC Wimbledon (11 July, lost 3-2), Northampton (18 July, drew 0-0) and Leicester (1 August, lost 0-1), with a fourth against Espanyol scheduled for 8 August. Lineup detail is incomplete for games two and three, but the pattern across what is confirmed is consistent enough to draw from.

Wilson at £4.5m is the clearest signal in the squad. He played both halves against Wimbledon and started every friendly with confirmed data. Ben Dovin (£4.0m) is the only other keeper on the sheet, and there is no evidence he has featured. If you want a Coventry asset and don't want to think about it again, this is the pick.

The back line is where the value actually sits. Six different defenders are priced at the £4.0m floor, and van Ewijk, Kitching and Bidwell all have two confirmed starts each. van Ewijk's goal in a friendly doesn't mean much on its own, but combined with the start count it says he's part of the first-choice back line, not a rotation option.

Torp and Grimes look like the midfield pair getting first-choice minutes, at £5.5m and £5.0m respectively. Neither is a slam-dunk attacking threat, but between them they cover the two players with the most consistent starting evidence in the middle of the pitch.

One player to actively avoid: Bassette, priced £4.5m in the squad list, has joined KVC Westerlo on loan for the rest of the season. He shows up in a squad screen and should not show up in your fifteen.

The fixture window that matters

Coventry's opening run is brutal on paper and genuinely useful for timing:

• GW2: home to Hull City
• GW3: away at Manchester City

The Arsenal and Man City fixtures are the kind of games where even a well-set-up promoted side struggles for clean sheets or attacking returns. GW2, at home to a fellow-promoted club, is the one game in the first three weeks where a Coventry asset has a realistic route to points. If you're building a squad around a Coventry pick rather than just parking budget there, that's the week to have them in your XI, not the bench.

Opposition quality varies wildly too. AFC Wimbledon are a League Two side, which tells you about fitness and rotation plans more than it tells you about Premier League readiness.

Treat the players with multiple confirmed starts (Wilson, Torp, Grimes, van Ewijk, Kitching, Bidwell) as the more reliable picks, and treat single-friendly appearances as suggestive rather than settled. Team news in the run-up to 21 August will confirm or override all of it.
