FPL Budget Enablers 2026/27: The Cheap Starters That Pay for Haaland

An enabler is not a bench filler. A bench filler is a £4.0m player who never plays and exists to make the numbers legal. An enabler is a £4.5m player who starts 35 games, scores 120 points, and lets you afford a £15.5m striker in the same squad.

The difference between the two is worth roughly 100 points a season, and it is knowable in advance. Minutes are the most repeatable thing in FPL. A player who played 3,000 minutes last season is overwhelmingly likely to play a lot this season, and the ones still priced at £4.5m are the whole reason a Haaland squad balances.

Goalkeeper: three ever-presents at £4.5m

Verbruggen, Petrović and Leno each played all 3,420 minutes last season. None costs more than £4.5m.

Three keepers played every single minute of last season and start this one at the cheapest goalkeeper price in the game. Verbruggen (BHA, £4.5m) returned 130 points, which is inside ten points of what most people paid £5.5m or £6.0m for.

Pairing two of these is the cleanest £9.0m in FPL. It costs you almost nothing against a premium keeper and frees £2.0m or more against the structures most managers will start with.

Defence: the £4.5m tier that actually plays

This is where the season is won on budget. Six defenders at £4.5m played more than 3,000 minutes last season.

Mitchell (CRY, £4.5m) is the best of them: 135 points, 3,253 minutes and 12 clean sheets. At the cheapest defensive price in the game that is a starting full-back who returned more than most £5.5m defenders.

Cash (AVL, £4.5m) is the one with the extra route to points, because he takes Aston Villa's corners. Three goals and three assists last season from 3,016 minutes, and the set-piece duty is not priced in at £4.5m.

Kayode (BRE, £4.5m) played 3,258 minutes with ten clean sheets, and Shaw (MUN, £4.5m) managed 3,220. Neither is exciting. Both are starters at the minimum price, which is exactly what the job requires.

Defence: paying £5.0m to £5.5m for real returns

If you have the money, this bracket is where budget defenders start scoring like mid-price ones.

Truffert (BOU, £5.5m) was the standout budget defender in the game last season: 165 points from 3,378 minutes with six assists. At £5.5m he is still cheaper than most people's third defender.

Van Hecke (TOT, £5.0m) is the one to watch closely. He scored 148 points across 3,210 minutes last season, but he did that at Brighton. He starts 2026/27 at Tottenham, so the minutes case has to be rebuilt from preseason rather than assumed.

Midfield: five and a half million buys a starter

Zubimendi (ARS, £5.5m) has the best underlying case: 133 points, 2,991 minutes and 16 clean sheets, which is more than any other midfielder in this bracket. Arsenal keeping clean sheets is worth a point a game to a defensive midfielder who plays every week.

Xhaka (SUN, £5.5m) takes Sunderland's corners and direct free kicks, which is the same argument as Cash one line up. Six assists last season from 2,901 minutes.

Aaronson (LEE, £5.5m) has the highest ceiling of the group with eight assists, though at 2,449 minutes he is the least nailed.

Forwards: the fifth and a half million problem

The third forward slot is the hardest one to fill cheaply, because the cheapest forwards mostly do not start.

Calvert-Lewin (LEE, £6.0m) is worth the extra £0.5m over the £5.5m options. He scored 14 goals in 2,721 minutes and he takes Leeds' penalties, which no forward below him in this table does. Welbeck (BHA, £6.0m) is the same profile: 13 goals, and Brighton's first-choice penalty taker.

Below £6.0m the honest answer is that you are buying a rotation risk. If your structure needs a £5.5m third striker, Beto (EVE, £5.5m) scored nine goals in 1,551 minutes, which is the best rate in the bracket, but he has never held a starting spot for a full season.

What this buys you

Put the enablers together and a squad with Haaland stops being a squeeze. One structure the numbers support, at £98.0m:

• Forwards: Haaland (£15.5m), Gyökeres (£7.5m), Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m)

That is Haaland, the top-scoring midfielder in the game, a Liverpool midfielder on all three set-piece duties, and a £7.5m striker who was £9.1m last season. It leaves £2.0m in the bank, and every one of the eleven cheap slots is filled by someone who played at least 2,700 minutes last season.

The structure works because the enablers are real starters, not filler. Swap any two of them for £4.0m non-players and the same squad drops a bench-worth of points across the season.

The one caveat

Minutes evidence is backward-looking. A £4.5m defender who played 3,000 minutes last season can still lose his place in August to a signing, and enablers are the picks most exposed to that, because they are cheap precisely where squads have room to strengthen.
